Noise - Week 2

Truth Hurts

The saying goes that the “truth hurts.” In week two of our Noise series, Lead Pastor Aeric Wallace takes us through the highs and lows of life — from unending joy to devastating trauma — where we learn that the cold, hard truth can sometimes hurt.

But why does the truth hurt? Because sometimes, we have to start where something hurts in order to move forward. Let’s break it down:

  • Truth: We all desire the truth. We can agree that we don’t usually want to be lied to. However, in our world, we stop labeling things as “true” if they are painful. But why?

  • Hurts: We feel this pain because we never learned how to receive the truth for ourselves or effectively communicate the truth to others.

Instead, we tend to filter the truth through our own trauma, which is a trauma response. Our outside truth conflicts with our inner identity (even if we don’t claim our subconscious inner selves). Even if you don’t think you’ve experienced trauma in your life, we all experience generational trauma stemming from Adam and Eve.

If we trust Him and learn to harness previous trauma — not ignore it — we can actually filter the toxic, dangerous behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs out of future similar experiences.

They didn’t just eat from the wrong tree and become obsolete. No — their actions effectively changed our way of life so we are no longer able to tell the difference between the truth and a lie. And while we were initially designed as clean and pure, our generational trauma tainted our original design

In fact, we tend to believe lies that the Lord has already proven false:

The Truth:

1 Peter 5:7

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”

The Truth:

1 Peter 5:8

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”

The Truth:

1 Peter 5:9

“Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.”

The Truth:

1 Peter 5:10

“In His kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.”

Sometimes, trauma feels good because it allows you to feel anything at all. We choose to hold on to trauma because we’re afraid to let go of the fear, anger, bitterness, and hatred. Most of us want a miracle where the Lord takes all our suffering away. But when we sin, we re-enter our generational trauma — over and over and over again.

However, the Lord can interrupt our inner voice and replace our anxiety, fear, and anger with other emotions. If we trust Him and learn to harness previous trauma — not ignore it — we can actually filter the toxic, dangerous behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs out of future similar experiences.
