We Are The Heathens - Week 6
I Got This
The final week in our We Are The Heathens series follows David, a hero-turned heathen.
Lead Pastor Aeric Wallace began this series discussing Samson, and this week he dove into another hero ordained by the Lord who still made a many mistakes. In the story of David and Bathsheba, we see David adopt an “I’ve got this” mentality, which ultimately affected his whole life.
Though he was a servant of God and an obedient man, he began working and making decisions alone. Instead of giving credit to the Lord, King David began to take the credit of his successes for himself. These decisions effectively snowballed: David didn’t go to war, he summoned Bathsheba and slept with her, tried to trick her husband, had him killed, and then brought Bathsheba into his home as a sign of remorse. You might ask: And God used HIM?
However, we can see similar patterns in our own lives. After attending church or finding community, we adopt a passive mindset and refuse to bring our problems, fears, and joys to others. Plus, just like David, we choose to do things alone because we’re less likely to get caught doing the things we shouldn’t.
We forget that life’s problems are bigger than us, but not bigger than our God who can turn heathens into heroes and use hero-turned heathens for good.
While most of us don’t indulge in bad behavior, but tip-toe around the possibilities. We know our limits, yet we find ourselves in positions where we push them and end up where it’s “too late.” Why do we wait for “too late” situations? “Too late” positions move us into areas we never intended and create personalities devoted to places we were never supposed to be in. These positions can cause us to fall into the lie that now God doesn’t want to help us. We assume we need to work our way back to him instead of allowing him to meet us where we are.
When we’re stuck in bad places, we become mistake managers. We try to make the best of situations, especially ones we don’t want or weren’t supposed to own. We forget that life’s problems are bigger than us, but not bigger than our God who can turn heathens into heroes and use hero-turned heathens for good.
